about

Welcome to the Strands of Consciousness Project, a compilation Charity album whose net profits will benefit the Ancient Forest Alliance and their protection of Old Growth Forests in British Columbia.

In todays busy world we are constantly having to make sacrifices to maintain our way of life. But now the very things that keep our air and water clean, that keep our environment healthy and alive are being put in jeopardy in the name of shortsighted progress. It is not enough to be passive. It is not enough to stand by, we the people have the power to shape the world for the better. We need only reach out to the keyboard to do it. This is why we have scoured the continent to bring together some of the most talented artists in the electronic scene, as a unified community to raise awareness not just for the Ancient Forest Alliance but for other causes that need our attention. It is up to us to awaken from our slumber and be the Strands of Consciousness.

~LOOK OUT FOR THE HARDCOPY "SPECIAL EDITION" OF THE ALBUM TO BE ON SALE JULY 5th AND WILL BE AVAILABLE AT THIS YEAR'S BASS COAST AND SHAMBHALA MUSIC FESTIVALS~

Primary Cause info:

The Ancient Forest Alliance (AFA) is a British Columbian organization working to protect the endangered old-growth forests of BC and to ensure sustainable forestry jobs in the province. It was registered as a BC non-profit society in February 2010 and is run by BC environmental activists Ken Wu, TJ Watt, Joan Varley, and Hannah Carpendale.

The Importance of Old Growth Forests:
-Are home to a large array of biodiversity, including many species at risk that need old-growth forests and that can't flourish in younger forests.

-Counteract climate change by storing two to three times more atmospheric carbon per hectare than the ensuing second-growth tree plantations that they are being replaced with.

-Provide clean water for people, spawning salmon, and wildlife.

-Are fundamental pillars of BC's multi-billion dollar tourism industry.

Your purchase of the album will help the A.F.A as they:

-Explore and document endangered ancient forests, record-sized heritage trees, and areas destroyed by old-growth logging.

-Educate the public through the media, online tools, our own publications, and through direct interaction.

-Research and explain to the public government policies and the science surrounding BC's forests.

-Organize public forums, slideshows, rallies, protests, hikes, campouts, petition drives, and letter-writing campaigns to build widespread grassroots support.

-Build alliances with potential allies and non-traditional allies.

-Empower, train, and support local activists to build campaigns in their own communities, particularly in provincial swing ridings.

-Meet with key government decision-makers to inform and engage with them about BC forest policies.

Secondary Causes & Petitions:

Petition against Bill 4:
Recently the BC government has pushed through a piece of legislation that opens the door for our parks to be used for industrial purposes such as pipelines, oil and gas.

"Unless we act now to repeal this law, some of the most beautiful parks in Canada could be opened up to industrial development. This could set a dangerous national precedent as oil, gas and mining companies scramble to extract as many fossil fuel resources as possible from deep below the soil. But if we add our voices to the thousands of letters that the BC Ministry of Environment has already received, they will be forced to respond." - Some of Us Bill 4 petition campaign page

Ban on Fracking:

Information taken from - www.dangersoffracking.com
"Hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking”, is the drilling and insertion of fluid into the ground at a high pressure in order to fracture shale rocks to release natural gas inside. In the process of this, methane gas and toxic chemicals leach out from the system and contaminate nearby groundwater. Contaminated well water is used for drinking water for nearby cities and towns. There have been over 1,000 documented cases of water contamination next to areas of gas drilling as well as cases of sensory, respiratory, and neurological damage due to ingested contaminated water.
Methane concentrations are 17x higher in drinking-water wells near fracturing sites than in normal wells. The waste fluid is left in open air pits to evaporate, releasing harmful VOC’s (volatile organic compounds) into the atmosphere, creating contaminated air, acid rain, and ground level ozone."

Oil and gas for now are still a necessary resource, however when your own drinking water is flammable, the lines need to be drawn. Support the Fort Nelsons First Nations in their petition to ban Fracking!
